Thanks to all who responded. Brian Kelly was able to send photos which helped this old brain understand. Really simple, but I had envisioned some mousetrap-like spring arrangement. As for "dimples" in the octagon tube, I too have a reproduction piece which seems to lack any such thing. Thanks to all.
