Tom, I have had as many as 165 cranks here in my shop at any one time. 
I've never seen a problem of a crankshaft warping from being stored on 
its side. The best way to store them is if you only have 1 or 2 is in a 
cardboard type box. Like they come in from the crank makers. If you have 
4 or more you might want to build a rack that you can hang the crank by 
the flange. The rack can be made to fit under a bench and keep the 
cranks off the ground. Standing them up is OK but it is too easy to 
knock one over. Then it knocks the next one over like dominoes and the 
chance of the counterweight of one crank hitting the journal of the next 
one is too great. WD-40 or any spray lube will keep them from rusting.
