In 1959 Firestone needed a car for testing NASCAR tires that could run a lot of very fast laps at Daytona - Indy driver Jim Rathman who was a Chevy dealer in Florida put together a 59 Chevy with a 348 engine in the normal location and a stock 283 FI engine behind the driver - Jim mounted a Hallibrand V-drive behind the transmission with the 348 driving straight through the lower shaft - The 283 drove through the V-drive like a boat with no clutch or trans. |
