We have been planning our 50th high school reunion and I had to be very firm
about not having it on the second weekend in August. My daughter picked
that weekend to get married last year. First weekend of racing on the salt.
Thoughtless kids!!!

We're having the reunion the 6th of July instead ... so it only messes up my
going to either;
The largest hot rod/custom car show in the state, or,
The second day and night of the Salt Lake City International Jazz Festival,
<www.slcjazzfest.com>. I was involved with the clinics last year and
thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the artists better and hearing their
presentations. I'll only get one day of the clinics this year.

The disheartening part is that the people on the committee don't have
feelings either way for either of those events. They're just happy to have
an excuse to get out of the house on a summer day. The calendar can add on
the years but I personally refuse to get old! There's just too many
interesting things to do.

There is a group of over 30 musicians from around Salt Lake, all in their
70's and 80's, who have formed a group called the Phoenix Big Band. They
are all fine players and this band has been a great impetus for some to get
out their horns and practice again. They add an extra horn in each section
so they don't have to play so loud but they are having a great time playing
together. They have put out five albums, play all kinds of schools and
small events and generally have a great time together. Several are long
time studio musicians in Hollywood, old sidemen from the Big Band era and
leaders of their own groups. It's not only hot rodders who stay young!
