rgribble,

To be total honest, I know you are right, but I hope it will grow
slowly. I guess the thing that bothers me about this whole discussion
is that you seem to want to change the Bonneville experience to which I
have become accustom. To me Bonneville is more that a race course. The
Bonneville meets are a pilgrimage. It is where you go at least once a
year to meet old and trusted friends, to compete, to try new ideas, to
just enjoy each others company.

I have no problem with the growth of the Sport, however, I do dislike
the idea that those new to the Sport, who come to join in our fun,
aren't satisfied to play by our rules and earn the right to suggest and
make changes. What we have at Bonneville was bought with a price. Many
sacrifices have been made to get where we are today. Both the SCTA and
USFRA have seen times when they didn't have the money in hand to put the
meet on.

The SCTA acquired control of the Bonneville Nationals in 1961 during my
tenure as president. The reason it was dropped in our lap was because
those in control, at the time, had grandiose ideas about expansion of
the Sport. As it happened, the time was not right for that to happen, so
we took over with the corporation $700 in debt. Since that time SCTA
has struggled at times to keep solvent, no doubt it was tempting to take
money from other than its members to keep afloat, but wisdom prevailed
and they bootstrapped themselves back into the black. There have been
many changes along the way and I am certain there are more to come. My
prayer is that wisdom still prevails.

I am not focusing this missle at anyone in particular, certainly not at
you, but please understand that there are those of us who have much
invested in this venue of LSR. We know that in all of life, change is
inevitable. We know that things will not ever be as they were in days
past. But, please don't sell us short, and most of all, don't sell us out!
