George,
This is an unofficial comment from someone who does not have all the
answers but who has worked for and with NASCAR for years. If you look at
their rulebook it says: Quote- It is recommended that helmets meet the
specifications set forth in the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard
Regulations or meet the specifications set forth by the American National
Standards Institute, Inc.
That's it. Why not more specific? I was told by a friend in the legal
profession that being more specific could be construed as guaranteeing
protection and could create liability. The rest of the safety gear is
addressed in the same manner. The only thing I know for sure is that I have
watched far too many good human beings die in race cars. The common
denominator in almost every one is concrete walls. The last one I can
remember that did not involve a wall or barrier of some kind was Dan
McTavish at Daytona in 1959. There are probably others but I don't remember
them. In my first drivers meeting this year at Tucson Raceway Park, I'm
going to remind the guys of the value of human life. We only race for $1000.
to win at this level.
