Good News for land speed racers!

Lew Kirkman, from the Salt Lake BLM office, reported today that the
possible salt closure threat has evaporated. Steve Bloch, an attorney
for SUWA (Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance) had been making noise
about forcing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Had such a
study been implemented, it would has stopped all racing on the salt
for a two-year period.

Kirkman attributes part of the "powering down" to the rapid media
attention to the subject, in addition to the strong stewardship by the
racers and "Save the Salt," a non-profit group dedicated to preserving
the salt flats for generations of racers to come.

Land speed racing enthusiasts are cautioned that threats from
uninformed environmental groups are always possible and are a good
reason to be alert to such information. As demonstrated in this case,
quick response revealing the threat helped to "nip it in the bud."
