Hi Keith.  Just some speculations.  The egt would rise because of lean
mixture, right?  If the ignition was over-advanced, it would result in
less power because of excessive pressure rise on the piston before tdc,
and maybe detonation on the power stroke before the exhaust valve
opened.  I gather detonation is the result of a number of factors, one
of which is ignition timing, others are fuel characteristics,
compression ratio, combustion chamber design, turbulence, rpm,  etc.
