Steve -

As a general rule, I never bother downshifting in the BJ8 box except from
4th to 3rd, anything less you are better off using the brakes because brake
pads are way cheaper and easier to replace than synchro rings or a clutch.
Of course this means you have to brake intelligently (esp. going downhill)
and not burn em.

Another thing to consider other than a worn synchro is if the throwout
bearing is worn, you'll have a tendency to grind various gears.
