The reset shaft/knob hole should be sealed with a spring, a small, thin metal 
washer and a felt washer. If you enlarge the hole too much these might poke 
through.

Although you can pull the speedo apart with the trip lever on and the face 
attached, the correct way is to carefully remove the needle and the face. You 
must do this to put the speedo back together.
