[Healeys] 123 distributor (GB6) in BJ8

A friend of mine is putting a 123 distributor in his Bj8. The circuit diagram
that comes with it shows a ballast resistor with the coil. Is this essential
for the 123 distributor? (The instructions donbt mention this, just
recommend using a new coil)
