Are you sure of that Peter?
Metric system has been used in France from the Revolution. Of course it
has been a long way to get rid of all the ancient measures and we still
happen to buy a pound of butter instead of 500 grammes, but the official
system used in construction and mechanic was metric for a long time at
the moment of WWI.
