| Shortly after my post this afternoon we were notified that the new halfshaft
was in fact arriving at the Gander airport in about 30 minutes.? When we
installed it the flange would not pull up tight to the face of the hub and on
close examination it became clear that the axle housing itself was bent on both
ends--no doubt the reason for the break. In fact there were some wear marks on
the left side axle as well where it was rubbing against the bearing housing.
In any case we removed the axle housing from the car and brought it to a nearby
service station where--as I write--several locals are attempting to straighten
it with the judicious use of a four-post lift with a 250 Ford loaded on top of
it for weight along with a smoke wrench.?
I'm anticipating that it will all go back together and that we will be able to
drive tomorrow so I am going back to the hotel to begin to work on the day's
route books.
Best--Michael Oritt
