Did EXACTLY the same, using some 1/4" aluminum flat bar stock - much easier
to drill and shape. They have been in place for 44 years now, during which
time I have not even had to retighten the bolts!

I'm 5'-10", and that simple (and reversible without ANY damage to "original"
condition) mod lets me run the seat all the way back.
