I will put in my $0.02 worth of experience. Same problems with engine dying.
As long as I had jumper cables to another battery, it would run. I checked my
generator and it was working properly. I traced the problem to the control box
and found there was a broken metal strip on the back of the box. Jumpered it
temporarily and worked great till I found a new one (5 years later).
