Healey Message "Trailer"

i'm too lazy to look it up, so can someone tell me why we have the trailer
on each message that prevents a sent message from going to the list unless
the trailer is deleted?  I'm on the E-Type list and they don't use one. 
Just curious as to what benefit it serves.
