Hello FOT,
I wanted to report some great news regarding the Sonoma Kastner Cup. As many
of you may be aware, the registrations by Triumph drivers is very low this
year. We only have a dozen cars to date. But significantly, SVRA has
committed that the Kastner Cup will run as a separate run group throughout the
weekend regardless of the car count.
This includes the Kastner Cup race on Saturday, and a KC Reunion race on
Sunday. Most cars will also be able to run in their regular run group as well
as the Kastner Cup. There is a conflict with Triumphs that may run in Group 8
but we have asked for a schedule adjustment and we should know what changes
they can make by next week.
Bottom line is that we will have 30 minute races both Saturday and Sunday.
Also important is that the test day includes three 30 sessions; 1.5 hours total
on track. Sonoma has a brand new race surface this year, so it will be
interesting to find out how that impacts lap times.
I also want to confirm what Henry Frye wrote recently that the new fire
supression system requirements will not be enforced until next year. Regarding
tires, the Kastner Cup is open. Since we don't have any special tire
limitations, just run on what you have in the past or what you may want to try
out this year. However, if you're running slick tires for example, you will
not be eligible for a points/podium finish in your regular run group; but that
will not impact your Kastner Cup results.
So I ask this question; who is going to win the two Kastner Cup races in 2024?
While our Grand Marshall Hardy Prentice will select the Kastner Cup Trophy
Winner, the field is wide open for race podium finishes without the 250k or
TR8's running. I think its stacking up to be an outstanding weekend with lots
of track time and unknown race results.
I hope you'll consider joining in the fun if you're not registered yet. Thanks.
Curt Johnston
