I've rebuilt our engine, first doing the head, summer of 2006, after the
original was found to be cracked, then the bottom end, winter of 2007, when
I found the bearings needed replacing and the crank ground, and then the
sleeves and pistons when we overheated and cracked two of the liners, summer
of 2008. I have been accused of being a perfectionist, but in the case of
engines I think this a good thing. Being a graduate engineer, I also have a
very keen sense of attention to detail. I've always gotten the right gauges
to measure and check things and have 3 Snap-On torque wrenches which I use
to torque just about everything (which sometimes drives my partner, son
Ryan, a little crazy). I've also made quite a few special tools to do the
job right using the lathe and milling machine I have. (I did control
engineering in the machine tool industry for over 40 years, you learn quite
a bit on how to use the machine tools when you have to design and develop
the controls to make them work.)
Without the help I got from Jack and Tony Drews I'm sure I would have had
problems but the engine runs strong and we have 2 schools and 3 races on it
so far. Still running strong. Have learned a lot in the process.

Curiosity
Just wondering how many racers build their own engines vs have them
professionally built and prepped?

Daryll at Racetorations in England makes a set of bearing caps, along
with a new front sealing piece and a steel rearbearing carrier for the
TR6. Probably has the same kinda stuff for the TR4,I just did not
look. I bought the TR6 stuff along with hismuch stiffer aluminum
sump. Those items, plus the ATI fluid damper should help cure some of
the 6's crankshaft woes [I hope].
