I discussed a lot this numbers with the manufacturer but he said, if it
doesn't work he will eat his hat and will send me a new set of pistons. The
pistons are custom made from Mahle.

I don't have the numbers here with me but 0.0024 seems like a prescription
for scuffed pistons. I think I am running 0.004 and numbers 1 through 3 and
0.005 on number 4.

You are not alone in thinking: How I ever build an engine.
When I first did an engine I had nearly no knowledge about engines but they
last then.
Now, trying to build the engine very precise I have more and more trouble.
The next troublesome thing that could arise is scuffed pistons.
I have ordered new forged pistons and the manufacturer insists on 0.0024
piston to wall clearance.
I hope that will work but he said I could run the pistons with half the
clearance if I would like.
His words in Gods ears.

This has been a bad year for us too, we have discovered new and
interesting ways to destroy Spitfire engines. We blew up 3 engines.
1. seized gudgeon pin after several races 2. over heated number four
cylinder resulting in a broken valve destroying a head and block 3.
center main was wiped out with no apparent reason. It has been a
tough year and I am beginning to think I don't know how to build an
engine after almost 50 years of hot rodding cars.
