For the TR3, I run the standard mechanical water temp gauge; if the tube
(not wire) breaks, the gauge goes to minimum, unless it is crimped.
The problem is that the bulb is so high in the cooling system that it can
become uncovered by the liquid, and read normally while the motor gets hurt.
The oil temp gauge will not respond to coolant loss in time.
My solution is to run a self powered cylinder head temp sensor in place of
the #4 sparking plug washer to power an additional dash gauge. The spark
plug recess must be carefully ground out at the bottom to make room for the
tab and wire on the washer.
Trust me, this gauge really moves if the coolant gets low & it is good to
have a second opinion anyway.
The only other electrical gauge on the car is the voltmeter.
DNF is a dirty word on our team.
