Some years ago, certain members of the Minnesota Porsche Club decided
to end such tales by having a speed gun at the end of Branierd International
raceways mile long straight. In many cases, it only substantiated such
tales.
I recall that the top speed was posted by a RUF prepared 3.2 liter
Twin Turbo was clocked at over 180 mph, 187 if I recall properly. This was
about 1993-4, the newer 3.6 liter were not out at the time. This cars would
do laps at BIR below 1:55.
For comparison purposes, the 2 liter vintage Porsches with experienced
would run between 2:05 to 2:10. I seem to recall that they were doing about
110 to 120 at the end of the BIR straight.
