Here are a couple of comments from my personal experience. I too have a
stack of 4" wide wheels, which I have always assumed were TR-3 wheels.
Here is the reason why. When I started racing my TR-4 in SCCA (1974), the
rule on wheel size was that you could run wheels that were 1 1/2" wider
than the stock wheels supplied on the car by the manufacturer. At that
time the TR-4 was allowed to run 6" wheels (i.e. reflecting a 4 1/2 inch
stock wheel), but the TR-3 was only allowed to use 5 1/2" wheels
(reflecting a 4" stock wheel).

In spite of what the book says, my experience is that the TR-3's came with
4" wide wheels

Lister's:
I have a topic that I need your help with. I am trying to finish the
restoration of my '60 TR3A and have reached the point where I need to have
my
wheels blasted and painted in preparation for the new tires. I was
examining the
wheels and noticed they were 4J x 15's and remembered that Bill Piggott's
book
mentioned something about this size wheel. Sure enough, in the section on
wheels
Piggott says that these wheels were put on TR2's up to comm # 1868. They
were
changed because there was a problem during hard driving with fractures, and
the
rim would separate from the wheel centre. After that they were supplied
with 4
1/2J x 15's, and he says "replacements were supplied retrospectively to
earlier
cars, and consequently very few of these early wheels survive". Now comes
my
problem! I went out into the parts yard yesterday afternoon to locate the
"proper" wheels, and could find only stacks of 4J x 15's. Now either
somebody is
mistaken, or I have the market cornered on wheels that should not have
survived
a recall. What are the odds that all these "bad" wheels were sent to Ft
Worth,
TX? The numbers are clearly stamped on the inside of the rim where they are
protected from most abuse, so they can be read easily. They all also
measure 4"
across the inside, bead to bead.
Can anyone help me with an answer to the mystery wheels?
                              Thanks, Ed Barnard
