I painted my car myself, and I was about to give you some advice when I
remembered that the job I did looked like sh** and I had someone else
repaint it. 

You are probably much better off getting your local bondo bandit to do the
job. The worst part is that everything in your shop will have green dust on
it (or whatever color you shoot). Do the body prep yourself, then haul it to
a cheap paint shop & have them shoot it.
