Here's my take:

The 4-speed trans and the 5-speed trans shifters are positioned 
differently -- the 4-speed penetrates the tunnel further back than the 
5-speed.  My '66 car has a hole in the tunnel the same size (about) as the 
hole in the trim plate. When Nissan introduced the 2000 in March of 1967, I 
believe the changed the tunnel design and enlarged the hole to accommodate 
either transmission.  My '67-1/2 2000 has a tunnel hole which will 
accommodate either trans.  I believe, but do not know for sure, that this is 
standard on the later cars.

My recommendation:  Cut the carpet out around the entire opening, put the 
boot on the trim plate and don't worry about it.  The top of the trans 
tunnel is pretty well shielded from "road junk".

I can send you a photo of my trans tunnel, but I think all  it will show is 
that mine looks like yours.
