I think you'll find that it is difficult to re-install the front cover with
the head on.
You have to slide it in under the head and head gasket without trashing the
gasket.
I don't have 1st hand exp. on the U20 but this is certainly true of the L
series engines, which are of similar design.
The U20 engine has a design which allows the head to be removed without
removing the timing chain but not the reverse.
"can the timing chain be replaced without pulling the head, Taking for
granted that the oil pan is dropped and the front timing cover removed."
