My close friend and Iron Bottom co driver Mark always said the way to  torque 
bolts was to tighten them until they broke and then to back off  a half a 
turn.  Worked every time.

What do you mean by overcoming the residual torque? Is that  loosening the 
bolt a bit, or a lot, and then retightening right up to the  spec? Doing this 
one bolt at a time right?
