I read every word of the Mopars thread a couple of weeks ago and have kept
up on it since. The latest is that Rustoleum Rust Paint differs from
Tremclad in the type of oil base used, per a "marketing rep" at Tremclad
that someone had some long conversations with. People on that thread in the
U.S. have done some test samples with Rustoleum but so far the paint has not
yet cured to the point where they cannot scratch paint off with a
fingernail.
I am dedicated to using this method of painting on my project car. What can
I lose, right? After thinking a lot about how much of the "magic" is
attributable to the product (i.e. Tremclad) versus the method (loads of prep
work, getting a smooth dust-free finish by using a roller on diluted
self-leveling enamel paint, applying many very thin layers and sanding
in-between) I have decided I will try to get some Tremclad paint or, if I
cannot, use the strongest Rustoleum product I can find.
I have tried to get a guy in Canada to ship me a gallon of Tremclad but that
fell through because UPS won't ship liquid paint across the border nor will
the Postal Service. I also had someone near the border who would slip
across a gallon and then ship it to me--also fell through. If anyone on
this list is near the border and is willing to enable me, please shoot me an
e-mail off list.
If I cannot get ahold of some genuine Tremclad I am thinking of using a
Rustoleum Industrial product that is a modified aklyd oil based enamel.
That product bonds best when used with primer, so I was thinking of using 2
coats of the product primer diluted with 10-15% mineral spirits and then 4
more coats of the diluted paint itself. Roll and wetsand between every two
coats per the instructions in the thread. Then polish at the end.
In either case there will be a detailed write-up of the results on my
website when the time comes.
