OK I give up,

Has anyone had an issue similar to mine? I have a 69/1600 that runs
great except that the starter does not always catch. After pulling the
starter and inspecting the Pinion gear and flywheel I noticed the teeth
on the flywheel where worn in a few spots. I lived with rocking the car
to find a good spot on the flywheel for a year or so and was getting
tired of fighting it. A few weeks ago I decided to pull the engine and
trans. and replace the ring gear and starter. When the engine was out I
went as far as bolting up the starter and bumping the motor when it was
on the stand. Everything worked OK on the stand. However, I did notice
that the starter did not engage the first time when it was on the stand.
Each consecutive time it worked fine. I thought I was home free. I
have just completed putting everything back together and Im in the same
boat.

The new starter and ring gear do NOT engage every time. The starter
spins and the solenoid and pinion try to engage. Only after = dozen
attempts does the starter engage and the engine turn over. I cant
believe I did all this work and have the same results. Other than now I
have a freshly painted engine bay and engine. I looks good!!! I guess
that is something.

Any advice that does not involve pulling the engine again would be very
much appreciated. I would like to go to Road Atlanta and not spend the
weekend push starting the car.
