If the cam lobes on the number 1 cylinder are both pointing up (aka "Rabbit Ears" and the business end of the rotor in the distributor is pointing at the spark plug wire terminal going to # 1, then you should be able to see the timing marks on the crank pulley and they should be close to the tab on the front cover.
