I had something happen that produced similar results :

the choke cable casings were jumping out of the "seats" on the carbs... the 
ends ended up resting on the outer edges just enough to make things go wonky  - 
was intermittantly running w/the choke on/off.  Try completely disconnecting 
the cables and run it through the paces to see if it makes a difference. 
Re-adjusting the choke cables & making sure all was well w/ the casings seemed 
to 
have cured the problem.
