Ammeter.... side note the low windshield cars used a
form of a D'Arsonval movement.  Large coil of copper
wire if you get one apart. The high windshield cars
used a shunt (basically the current flows through a
small resistor -aka shunt- and a sensitive voltmeter
measure that current flow).

As to a possible source of the resistance measured:
The diodes in the alternator fail with age. If the
battery goes dead after sitting for a few days, always
wise to check to see if you have any currently flowing
into the "+" post of the alternator. Not uncommon at
all to have diodes act a little "leaky" resulting in
enough of a current draw to kill a battery after a few
days.
