Hi Mike ,
In laymen's terms , A syncro (Synchronizer) is used to Stop the main gears in
the
transmission so that the selected gear can be selected .Nissan used 2 different
types
in Roadsters .
The first style is an exact copy of the Porsche "Steel" brake band type .
Also referred to as Servo Syncro .This type acts like a compression ring to
lock the
gear so that it stops .
They are very "positive " in stopping the gear when new ,and are used in all
Nissan
Competition
Racing 5 speeds ( They shift like "Butter"at very high RPM's ).However the draw
back
to the
design is a high coefficient of friction ,therefore they wear rapidly .The
other style
used the
last year of the Roadster 5 speeds and ALL other Nissan products from then on
is the
Warner "Brass" type .This type relies on conical interference angles to stop
the main
gears .
They have long life and work reasonable good ,but are not that good at stopping
the
gears
at high RPM's .Thus making it hard to shift them when driven hard or with High
horsepower
going through them .Using Synthetic gear lubes are the "Ticket" ! Also makes
servo
syncros last many times longer.
