Dan,
I had similar problem with my temp/fuel gauge. It turned out to be bad
ground at the thermostat housing where you have aluminum, brass, and steel ,
none of which like each other. The correct thermostat gasket has a tiny
staple in it which grounds the housing to the head. My quick cure at the
moment was to wrap a steel wire around the entire housing so that the
thermostat dome had continuity with the rest of the head and steel bolt.
Just throwin it out there, hope it helps.
