You may have already done this but I don't think anyone mentioned it. Take the wire to the sender off and touch it to a known good ground with the ignition on. If the temp gauge goes all the way hot then the sender is the likely problem (or a bad ground on the 2L). If the gauge doesn't move off of cold the sender isn't the problem - or at least you'll know that there are other problems that a new sender won't fix.
