On the temp gauge problem - double check that you've got a good ground. I
don't know if it's the same for the R16, but  in the U20 the ground between
the sending unit and the engine is supposed to be provided by a metal staple
embedded in the gasket - and it doesn't always work so well. I jumped around
the gasket interface with a length of wire (I think I read that in the Rallye
catalog... ) and it works just fine (at least it did the last time my engione
got warm - 'bout 11 years ago!).
