Axel Assembly

Ok, this may or may not be a new one.  Somebody once told me that a rear axel 
from a Ford Mustang II would just bolt right in on a roadster.  If this is the 
case, it opens up a world of opportunity for rear gear ratios...rather cheap.  
Has anyone heard of this, or tried it before?  Or, did I just dream it hoping 
it would be an alternative to spending big bucks for mid range 4 ls gear 
assemblies?
