Dan,
You know that the gauge works by the grounding test. I believe that the sender
is
a variable resistor that should change with temp. So use an Amp meter and see
if
there is a change with temp. If there is the most likely problem is a bad
ground.
With non-OEM gaskets t here is no staple in the gasket - so there is no ground.
An ugly but used method is to run a wire to the bolt that holds in the sender.
