Michael,

Take a look at the bottom spring perch again.
The shock is mounted, at the bottom, in the little
plate that is retained by the three bolts.

Drive the car up on some sturdy car ramps. Unloosen
the top stud, and remove the bottom three little bolts
hold the shock retaining plate.

The original shock should drop right out. No need to
compress the shock. Had the car been jacked up, and
not on ramps, the lower A-arms drop at enough of an
angle to make it near impossible to drop the shock out
the bottom. Little harder to get the top shock bolt,
but much easier to keep the a-arm level to remove
the shock.

Having said that, my roadster had an old set of Monroe
shocks (long since NLA), that were to thick to get out
the bottom hole. A tip from a fellow roadster owner was
to UNBOLT the upper ball Joint front the upper arm. Four
bolts, and lift the arm up, and you can lift out the
shock. DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS UNTIL YOU HAVE SOMEONE WHO
HAS DONE IT BEFORE MAKE SURE YOU ARE REMOVING THE CORRECT
BOLTS.

Safety First!
