Matt,
You said your rotor broke.  So, I think you may need to check to see if you 
damaged your distributor cap.  Or some other reason a rotor might break.  
Also, are there any fragments messing up the points?  If you replaced the 
cap, did you get the wires crossed?  Just check to be sure, I'm not downing 
anyone's mechanical ability.  The back fire that blows the muffler sure 
sounds like a lot of unburned fuel in the exhaust with a mixed up timing.
