frozen thermostat housing.

my thermostat houseing was in 2 pieces, one that the cap sat on and 
was about 3 inches tall which came off with a little persuasion and 
then a second shorter piece that seems just like a 1.5 inch thick 
collar that holds the thermostat in place, and is frozen on, I can't 
bang it off for the life of me and I'm scared adding heat will warp 
the head.  Any suggestions?
