Carb question

Fellow Roadsterers,

I bought some new floats and needle/seats for my 67.5 1600 SU carbs.

What's the trick to removing the little pin on the float bowl cover, so
that
I can get to the needle/seat?  It seems like it should slide right out,
but 
I ended up cracking the bridge, when I tried to punch the pin thru???
