Hi David (and Jan!!!!)

On subject of those little "raised up thingies" in the combustion chamber of
the Buick 300 head. In the December, 1963 issue of Cars Magazine, there is
an article on the "New for 64 Buick V6 and 300 V8". On page 38, there is a
photo of the combustion chamber of the alloy head with the following text:
"(The) small, cast-in shield at (the) spark plug hole prevents (the) plug
from wetting on cold starts." So, that's what it's for.

Greg,

Thanks for the link--very interesting (and expensive!!!) project.
Am I right that this is from New Zealand? I noticed something on the first
closeup view of the combustion chambers that I have been wondering
about--the little raised-up squarish things next to the spark plug holes--I
think they may be called "spark deflectors". Do you by any chance know
their purpose and/or importance? Do you think they could be removed
without compromising the head's performance?

Same questions to everyone else who may see this.

        TIA

Cheers,

Dave Kernberger
