Yes, you guessed right: "nearside" is the side nearest
the kerb (curb), while "offside" is the other side.
In England, nearside translates to the left of the car
when seated in the car.
In cricket, "the offside" means right to the wicket-
keeper is concerned, or left to the bowler, while "leg"
is left to the keeper or right to the bowler; unless
of course you are left-handed, in which case the reverse
is true. "square", on the other hand, is always the same
to the batsman, although it varies with respect to the
bowler and the wicket-keeper.
"Offside" in footer, though, is much more complicated...
