Regarding your timing question, the Haynes TR4 manual has a scheme for
setting timing that you may be interested in. Here are the basics:
-Set timing to specified setting.
-Fine tune on the road by accelerating from 30 to 50 mph in 4th gear and
listen for pinking.
If you hear pinking, the timing needs to be retarded slightly. Keep
repeating until just the faintest trace of pinking can be heard.
Be sure to warm the engine up first when you do this.
