------------------------------------------------------------------
I did an experiment over the weekend involving the Extend spray-on
stuff mentioned here before. I took a spot and just cleaned it up with
a wire brush and then sprayed on the extend stuff. It did turn black
and made a nice primer coating out of the rust. (the directions say to
let it sit overnight.) The next day I took a steel wheel for a drill
and took it to the spot. What I found was another layer of rust under
the black stuff. With the wire brush I was able to take it down to bare
metal. There were a few small bits bits of rust left that I just
couldn't get out. So I cleaned the area and then used the extend stuff
on it. I did this on a hidden part of my midget, on top of the rocker
panel under the front wing. The rockers were solid, but there was some
rust from clogged drain holes. Now there are only very small bits left.
In a few years maybe I'll strip it down again and see what it looks
like. But, overall it looks like the Extend stuff works as descibed,
but if the rust is more than just some surface bits I don't think I
would want to use it. I'll bet it sells since it makes it look like the
rust "goes" away when it turns black (the spray goes on clear).
