Last night, I think I discovered why the layshaft needs to be
replaced whenever the gearbox is apart. The laygears go into the bottom
of the gearbox without the layshaft. The procedure in the Haynes manual
for reassembly actually isn't "The reverse of removal." Haynes says to
make a tube for the laygear to go onto. Fit the needle rollers and put
the assembly into the gearbox. Now, take the layshaft and push it
through the gears, pushing the tube out in the preocess. I think the
idea of the new layshaft allows the old one to be used as the tube. The
layshaft is $27.95 from victoria british, so I guess using the old one
is easier than making up a tube.
I almost got the whole gearbox apart last night. The gears look fine
and the synchro rings don't have worn teeth either. I'm still going to
replace the synchro rings anyway.
Now, I'm beginning to think that all of the noise was caused by the
missing clutch fork pivot pin. I guess I should know in a few weeks.

    Dean
