With regard to tracking down shorts .... A really usefull thing to use in tracking down shorts in an automotive electrical system is an magnetic or thermal circuit breaker. I used an 8 amp one of these to track down a short in a VW Karmann-Ghia. Saved a lot of fuses and hassle.
