I have NOT used Freeze 12, but I did use another substitute R421 - I think.

It worked quite well, but requires a license to purchase.  I don't remember 
if Freeze 12 does or not.  But I do know that some of the R12 substitutes
do not require the EPA Certification.

Yes, I would use an R12 substitite.  One of these days, I'm going to buy
a case of one of them.  They run about the same price as R134a, but 
have a cooling curve that matches the R12.  So they will perform better
in the R12 systems than just converting to 134a.
