Welll!  I suppose you could jack up the chassis and go mud romping, but
what I had in mind was the kind of modern full-time 4wd using viscous
clutches and compact transfer cases that you find in an Audi or Subaru,
though I doubt the Subaru unit would handle much torque.  The AMC car you
are thinking of is the Eagle.  This was a rather high car that you still
see occasionally.  But 4wd systems have come a long way since those days.
