SONOMA, Calif. (IMMEDIATE RELEASE) - The excitement of the IRL
IndyCar(r) Series will soon invade Infineon Raceway as the entire series
comes to the Sonoma Valley for a two-day test session, April 12-13.
This will mark the first time these powerful machines will tackle the
twisting 12-turn, 2.26-mile road course. All 22 IndyCar(r) Series teams
are expected for the test, which will be the only chance for all teams
to test the circuit before the inaugural IRL event at Infineon Raceway,
Aug. 26-28.
All of the tops stars from the series will be on hand, including Tony
Kanaan (2004 IRL champion), Helio Castroneves (two-time Indy 500
champion), Buddy Rice (2004 Indy 500 champion), Sam Hornish Jr.
(two-time IRL champion), Dario Franchitti, Danica Patrick and more.
Franchitti is the only driver with prior open-wheel experience on the
Sonoma Valley road course, having taken part in a compatibility test in
November. He completed nearly 70 laps around the circuit, running at
90-percent of the car's capacity.
"I've never seen a track with elevation changes like this," said
Franchitti, driver of the #27 ArcaEx car for Andretti Green Racing.
"This place is going to be a challenge for drivers. It's a fun, quick
track."
Race fans will be admitted free to the test session and can watch the
testing from the main grandstand at the start/finish line. Gates open at
9 a.m. each day, with cars scheduled to take the track after lunch on
April 12, and all day on April 13 (9 a.m.-5 p.m.).
The test session will signal the countdown to the first world-class
open-wheel race in 35 years at Infineon Raceway when the IRL visits the
